Golders Green is a thriving residential community in north-west London, with numerous shops and restaurants that reflect the multicultural character of the area. Its busy streets belie the fact that Golders Green was a hamlet until the 1900s. It began to grow in 1907 with the opening of the local tube station and the establishment of several buildings that survive today. The Carmelite monastery was built in 1908, and the police station opened in 1913, as did the Grade II-listed Hippodrome music hall - later used as a BBC studio and concert venue before recently being abandoned.
