Glamis is a small village in Strathmore, Angus, situated 4 miles south of Kirriemuir and 5 miles south-west of Forfar. It is an ancient village full of historic interest. Glamis Castle is located on the outskirts of the village; once a hunting lodge from the 11th century and the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002). From the 15th century Glamis Castle was a large but simple L-plan tower incorporating the earlier structure. It was extended in the 16th and 17th century. It is a major visitor attraction allowing the public to view the Great Hall, with its magnificent over-mantle; an 18th century billiards room and a 17th century family chapel with walls illustrated by Jacob de Wet the Dutch artist.
