Situated eight miles south of the city of Bath, Frome is the fourth largest town in Somerset. Frome is a particularly attractive town, with cobbled streets winding up steep hills. It has the largest number of listed buildings in the county of Somerset. In AD685 the Abbott of Malmesbury, St Aldhelm, set up a mission on the banks of the River Frome and this sparked off the first permanent settlements in the town. The town originally grew due to the weaving industry and for seven centuries up until about 1650 it was bigger than the city of Bath.
