Fraserburgh is a town and fishing port on the north-east corner of the Buchan coast in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, situated 43 miles north of Aberdeen. Fraserburgh is known locally as the ‘Broch’ a Scots word for Burgh. The town is well-known for being the largest shellfish port in Europe. The town was founded in 1569 by Alexander Fraser, after being granted a charter in 1564, the first stone pier was built in1576 and the harbour was later developed and extended. The Fraser’s also built a Castle in 1547 on Kinnaird Head, a rocky promontory at the northern tip of town; in 1787 a lighthouse was built directly on top of the castle, and now forms part of the Scottish Lighthouse Museum.
