Fettercairn is a village close to the Grampian foothills in the edge of the Howe of Mearns, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Fettercairn is 4 miles west of Laurencekirk and the road to the north is the Cairn O’ Mount Road leading to Banchory and Royal Deeside. In 1861 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert spent a night in the Ramsay Arms. The stone, turreted Fettercairn Arch was erected in 1864 to commemorate the Royal visit. This can be driven through when entering the village from the south. The ancient village is built mainly from red-sandstone and focuses around the main square, in the heart of the village stands the Mercat Cross dating back to 1730, on the cross is an iron collar once used as the village stocks.
