Exning is a village in Suffolk, roughly 12 miles from Cambridge and 2.5 miles from Newmarket. Exning was one of the major settlements in this area during Anglo-Saxon and Medieval times. Between the 14th and 16th Centuries it is said that the population of Exning decided to leave their homes to try and escape the plague, and build a new settlement nearby. Thus 'New'market was born. Newmarket is now the largest racehorse training centre in Britain, and home to several horseracing institutions. Due to its proximity to Newmarket, Exning has several stud farms and a national equine hospital.
