Seven miles north of Alnwick and one mile inland from the sea in Northumberland in northeast England, is the small rural village of Embleton. The name is though to have originated from the old name ‘Emuldune’ meaning “hill of the caterpillar†due to the whinstone ridge which shelters the village from the sea, bearing resemblance to a caterpillar. Embleton Bay is close by with Dunstanburgh Castle at the southern end of the bay. The village of Embleton dates back earlier than medieval times and suffered much from the ravages of the Scottish border raids.
