About 15 miles West of Sheffield in North Derbyshire lies the valley of Edale. The valley consists of a few scattered farmsteads or booths as they are known locally, deriving from “Boothiesâ€, Shelters used by shepherds tending their flocks on nearby hillsides. The village of Edale itself makes up part of Grindsbrook Booth, set in a beautiful spot below Kinder Scout at the start of the Pennine Way, the longest footpath in England. The houses are built from traditional Derbyshire gritstone and the schoolhouse built in 1819 is still in use today.
