Eccles is a suburb of Manchester, to the north of the City tracing its history back to around 1200 and whose Romano British name is taken to simply mean “church†from the Latin “Ecclesiaâ€. Eccles, unlike other Manchester towns, managed to remain reasonably industry free until the latter part of the 18th century and then the canal arrived easing access and helping industry to grow. The area already a thriving silk industry but the climate and canal network soon meant that the mills were given over to cotton production.
