Known locally as ‘capital of the Wolds’, Driffield sits pretty much in the middle of that area, at the centre of a little sunburst of roads to Bridlington, Skipsea, Beverley, Scarborough, York and Market Weighton. Until the 18th century Driffield had been a rural village, but the coming of the Driffield Navigation, a canal extending the River Hull to the settlement, changed its fortunes, and when in the 19th century the railway came the village was transformed into a thriving market town.
