The historic town of Downpatrick is of huge religious importance. It's dominated by a magnificent Gothic cathedral built on a hill, where places of worship have existed since 1016. The cathedral marks the grave of St Patrick - who brought Christianity to Ireland - with a slab of Mournes granite. It's thought that St Columcille and St Brigid are also buried here. The town's links with St Patrick are celebrated and explained at exhibitions in the Down County Museum, located in a former jail and military barracks, and at the Saint Patrick Centre, where the story is told in his own words.
