Doune is one of the small villages along with Kirvick, Knock, Dalmore, Borrowston Garenin, Upper Carloway and Park Carloway that make up the district of Carloway on the west-side of the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, situated at the head of Loch Carloway 15 miles north-west of Stornoway. The area has a strong Norse and Celtic history although there is evidence of settlers dating back 5000 years. Historic landmarks include the Neolithic â€˜Clach na Tursaâ€™ Standing Stone, the Pictish Doune Broch, the Iron-Age Dun Carloway and nearby the well-known Callanish Standing Stones; arranged in the shape of a cross, they pre-date Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt, The Callanish Visitor Centre tells the story of the stones.
