Doune is one of the small villages along with Kirvick, Knock, Dalmore, Borrowston Garenin, Upper Carloway and Park Carloway that make up the district of Carloway on the west-side of the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland, situated at the head of Loch Carloway 15 miles north-west of Stornoway. The area has a strong Norse and Celtic history although there is evidence of settlers dating back 5000 years. Historic landmarks include the Neolithic ‘Clach na Tursa’ Standing Stone, the Pictish Doune Broch, the Iron-Age Dun Carloway and nearby the well-known Callanish Standing Stones; arranged in the shape of a cross, they pre-date Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt, The Callanish Visitor Centre tells the story of the stones.
