Dorking is a thriving market town set in the beautiful Surrey Hills. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as the Manor or Dorchinges. The manor had been seized by William The Conquerer for his own use after he defeated the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hasting in 1066. Prior to that Dorking had been a small staging post established on Stane Street, the roman road that linked the important roman settlements at Chichester and London. In 1750 a turnpike was constructed between Brighton and London, this once again made Dorking an important staging post.
