As can be guessed from its name, Doncaster has its roots in Roman times, when the fort of Caer Daun guarded an important crossing of the river Don, making the place a staging point on the land route between York and Lincoln. The town became known as Danum before it was Doncaster. Castra means camp, so Doncaster was the camp (or fort) on the river Don. Throughout its history has remained an important point on the route between North and South. In the age of the stage coach Doncaster was a significant stopping point.
