Dartford is a thoroughly modern destination, quite unlike a typical Kentish town. The former Roman settlement, industrial centre and Victorian market place was extensively rebuilt in the 1900s and today, with a population of more than 80,000, is working towards a new wave of regeneration. Some 20 miles east of London, it feels more like an outpost of the capital than a part of the Garden of England although it lies just within the Kent county border, on the north west. Dartford is situated on the Thames, and its famous tunnel leads M25 motorists below the river, while the spectacular Queen Elizabeth II road bridge rises to giddy heights.
