Situated 5 miles to the north-west of Hastings and just off the A2100 (the Hastings to Battle) road lies the village of Crowhurst; known as Croghyrst to the Saxons, the village was laid to waste by the invading Normans in 1066 just prior to the Battle of Hastings. It was first recorded in a charter of 771 in which King Offa of Mercia give the Bishop of Selsey a parcel of land in the village, in return the Bishop built the first church. After the conquest the manor was given to Robert, Count of Eu. In the 12th century Richard I gave it to Sir Walter de Scotney after his exploits in the 3rd crusade, Sir Walter forfeited the manor in 1259 after being found guilty (and executed) for the attempted poisoning of the Earl of Gloucestershire; the ruins of his 12th century manor house can be seen to the south of the church.
