Crook, more commonly known as Crook Market Town, lies about ten miles south-west of Durham in County Durham in the north east of England. It is situated a couple of miles north of the river Wear, on the A690 road as it turns into the A689 leading up through the picturesque higher reaches of Weardale near Stanhope and Wolsingham. It is the administrative centre for the Wear Valley District Council. The first records of Crook are as a small agricultural village around 1800 but by 1840 it had become a thriving coal mining village.
