A few miles from Durham, situated between Bowburn and Cornforth within the City of Durham, lies the village of Coxhoe, in the civil parish which also incorporates nearby Quarrington Hill. The village of Coxhoe lies close to the services on the A1(M) motorway road from Scotch Corner to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Elizabeth Browning spent her childhood in Coxhoe Hall, which was demolished by the National Coal Board on grounds of subsidence. Previously a rural area, Coxhoe was deemed to be a town in decline during the 1970’s but there has been considerable housing development in recent years with a good variety of retail shops and local businesses including service industries.
