Cowdenbeath is a town in west Fife in Scotland situated south-west of Lochgelly and a couple of miles east of Dunfermline. Originally an agricultural settlement Cowdenbeath has been in existence sitting on the main route to Perth with its coaching inn, now the Bruce Hotel, built c1820. With the discovery of iron and coal the town grew into a mining community from 1844 and was known as the colliery capital of the Fife coalfield. The railway arrived in 1849 enabling economical export of the iron and coal; this ensured a boom in the growth of mining earning the town the nick name ‘the Chicago of Fife’ until the pits went out of production closing down from the1930s to the1960’s.
