With a population of 17,263 at the last census, it might be expected that Cottingham would be a market town, but though there is a market this is the largest village in the country (or at least claims to be – others dispute the title). The market is held on the village green every Thursday, continuing a tradition dating back at least to 1200, when King John granted the settlement permission to hold markets. Cottingham is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the area was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age.
