Regarded by many as the jewel in Northumberland’s crown, Corbridge is located eighteen miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne just off the A69. Five miles north of the village is the site of the original Roman camp from which it grew, called Corstopitum, which marked the most northerly town in the Roman Empire. A supply town for the troops building and guarding Hadrian’s Wall, itt provided building stones for the construction of many of the local buildings including the church, vicar’s pele and nearby castles.
