Consett is a small town located high on the edge of the Pennines in northwest County Durham, close to the river Derwent and is the administrative capitol of the Derwentside district. In 1841 Consett was a small village with just over a hundred inhabitants. It became a boom town when a small group of entrepreneurs introduced the first blast furnaces and formed the Consett Iron Company. Perched on the eastern bank of the river Derwent, Consett owes its origins to the industrial development that arose from lead mining together with the development of the steel industry from the Derwent Valley.
