Only about a mile from the junction of the A1 at Stretton, situated in picturesque rural Rutland is the village of Clipsham. The village, although small, is famous for the stone from the nearby Clipsham Quarry. Clipsham Stone has been used for many famous buildings including Kings College Chapel at Cambridge, York Minster and for repairs to the Houses of Parliament. The limestone quarry is part of the Upper Lincolnshire Limestone Formation. During the 19th century, Amos Alexander was head forester at the Clipsham Estate.
