This fashionable district of Bristol is most famous for its suspension bridge. Clifton Suspension Bridge is a Grade One listed structure and one of the greatest engineering achievements of the Victorian age. It was designed and built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, perhaps the most famous of all the Great British engineers of those heady times. It was Brunel's first major commission, given to him when he won the second competition to design a bridge to span the beautiful but perilous Avon Gorge. Brunel was only 24 years old when he was appointed project engineer but sadly he died in 1859, before the completion of the controversial bridge which was dogged by political and financial difficulties.
