The small, peaceful village Churcham lies just off the old Roman road that ran from Gloucester to Ross-on-Wye, now the A40, five miles east of Gloucester. Once known Ham & Morton it was changed to Churcham just after the church was built around 1100, but the name reflected the ownership of the manor by the monks at Gloucester Abbey. In the mid 11th century Wolphin de Rue had to give to Gloucester Abby part of his estate as punishment for killing several monks of the Abbey! Although it is recorded the the Saxon noble Ethelmund had granted lands, that may have included Churcham, to the Bishop of Hereford in 780.
