The town of Christchurch historically lies within the boundaries of Hampshire. However, at the time of the 1974 local government re-organisation it was considered desirable that the whole of what is now called the South East Dorset conurbation, also including Bournemouth and Poole, should be part of the same county. Hence, Christchurch is now part of the county of Dorset. It is a picturesque town with a unique combination of fascinating heritage, beautiful coastline, peaceful rivers and a spectacular natural harbour.
