In the county of Kent, in the London Borough of Bromley, Chislehurst is one of the most congested areas of South East London. First mentioned in a charter of 973, its name derives from Saxon â€˜ciselâ€™ meaning gravel and â€˜hyrstâ€™ meaning wooded hill, the gravely soil made it unsuitable for cultivation but the village became popular with Londoners looking for property in the country, being high and well-drained but in little demand for agriculture. French Emperor Napoleon III died in exile in 1873 in Camden Place, now the site of Chislehurst Golf Club.
