Chipping Norton is the highest town in Oxfordshire. Its history is steeped in the wool trade which made it a wealthy town. Many of the mediaeval buildings built as a result remain in the town centre, including the Guildhall. There are also many Georgian buildings. St Mary’s church dates from the 13th century and is a fine example of a ‘wool church’. It was enlarged by wealthy local wool merchants. A market was started in 1205, and is still held every Wednesday, along with the "Mop Fair" in September.
