Charmouth is a picturesque seaside village about two miles east along the southern Dorset coast from Lyme Regis. The village is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The beach is formed from Lower Jurassic clay which is full of fossils which regularly wash out into the sands on the beach which makes Charmouth a popular destination for fossil hunters. Charmouth featured prominently during the development of the 'new sciences' of Geology and Palaeontology two centuries ago. The village itself is fairly unique, being a medieval planned community.
