Charlestown is a tranquil village in west Fife in Scotland situated on the coast next to the village of Limekilns, two miles south-west of Dunfermline. The village was planned and laid out in the shape of an ‘E’ by Charles the 5th Earl of Elgin c1760 to accommodate the workers engaged in the local industries of limestone production and coal-mining. Charlestown quickly became an important industrial centre, producing over a third of the lime of Scotland at the time, finally closing down in 1956.
