Nestling in the foothills of the Pennines in the south east of the County of Lancashire is the town of Chadderton close to Oldham. Historically its geographical location meant that up until the 18th century that this area was very much reliant on an agricultural based economy. However the coming of the cotton industry was to change the face of Chadderton and the surrounding towns from that moment on. Between 1776 and 1801 the local population grew from 2,000 to around 3,500 – just one hundred years later and the population was recorded as being some 24,900 – that was the power of industry, generating mass employment, it is recorded that some 6,000 worked in the cotton mills alone.
