The West Yorkshire town of Castleford has ancient roots, in Roman times being a settlement of considerable importance thanks to its strategic position as the crossing point of the River Aire by the Ermine Street Roman road. At one time Castleford was the centre of the British glassmaking industry, producing vast quantities of bottles for the drinks industry and other major users. It was also a mining town, but the rapid decline of that industry in the 1980s left a legacy of urban deprivation that still remains in parts of the town.
