The town of Carnforth first appears in the Domesday Book where it was known as 'Chreneforde', located in a slight valley where the River Keer enters the Kent estuary. The introduction of the railway network in 1846 brought a new prosperity to the town and such was its importance it was later expanded. Following the opening of the ironworks and the development of the railways in the latter half of the nineteenth century there was a period of rapid growth and Carnforth became an important railway junction, this in turn increased the local population as workers from the surrounding area, who had formerly been in agriculture, were attracted to the town.
