Capel-le-Ferne, whose name derives from the phrase "Chapel in the Ferns", is situated near Folkestone, Kent. Perched on top of the White cliffs of Dover, its foremost attraction is the Battle of Britain Memorial, opened by the Queen Mother in 1993. It is at the site of a gun battery, 400 feet above the Channel, from which 16-inch guns shelled occupied France. There are three footpaths down to the beach. One by the side of the Cliff Top Café, another by the Valiant Sailor pub at the opposite end of the village at the top of Dover Hill, and one from the caravan site opposite the Royal Oak pub.
