The east London district of Canning Town, located on the north of the Thames, is looking forward to a promising future. Back in Victorian times, it was a marshland slum. As Charles Dickens observed in 1857, "Canning Town is the child of the Victoria Docks", a place where poor housing was constructed for labourers toiling at the docks, the Bow Creek shipyard and the local coal wharves. Later, World War II brought a concerted bombing of the area, and in post-War years, the community struggled with unemployment and deprivation.
