For many years, the ancient agricultural village of Camberwell was a favourite holiday spot for people wishing to escape the bustle of the City of London or to tend their illnesses with what were believed to be healing waters from a local spring. In 1842, Felix Mendelssohn - visiting relatives - was so charmed by the countryside scenery that he composed the piano piece "Camberwell Green", which later became loved as "Spring Song". Things changed in the 1860s, with the advent of the railways producing a rapid increase in population.
