Close to Newton and lying alongside the River Severn and in the heart of the valley lies the village of Caersws. The town can trace its history back to Roman times, the River Severn was in Roman times known as Sabrina, the Romans built two forts here and excavations have revealed the ruins of some interesting stone buildings. After the Romans left it would seem that the area was left very much to its own devices and this led to some turbulent times under Norman rule, it was however to change for the better with the Tudors and Stuarts who brought more peaceful times with them.
