Situated on the north bank of the River Humber, the small town of Brough (its population is in the region of 7,000) is these days best known for its BAe factory and airfield, where planes like the Harrier jump jet have been made over the years. The plant was built at Brough because the nearby river allowed seaplanes to take off and land there. The town’s history goes back a lot further than 1916 though, with Bronze Age finds showing it has been settled for thousands of years. The Celtic tribe the Parisi lived in the area before the Roman invasion, their capital which later had the Latin name Petuaria occupying the same position as present day Brough.
