The modern town of Brighouse in West Yorkshire’s Calderdale district, with a population now approaching 33,000, has its roots in Saxon times or possibly even as far back as the Roman occupation when a tiny hamlet grew up by a crossing point of the river Calder. Over the years ‘Bridge House’ saw a series of bridges built, first in timber then stone, the traffic funnelled through the town bringing commercial opportunity. In the industrial age the Calder provided the power for the burgeoning textile industry and for grain milling.
