Brechin is situated in the valley of Strathmore, 9 miles west of Melrose. Brechin is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish region of Angus. Brechin was given royal burgh status in 1641. The parish contains the villages of Little Brechin and Trinity, the location of the 18-hole golf course and squash courts. Brechin has many structures of antiquarian interest including the 18th century Brechin Castle, the chapel of Maison Dieu Hospital 1267 and the medieval stone built Brechin Bridge. Standing on the river Esk in the town centre an archway from the high street opens to Bishops Close to the 13th century Brechin Cathedral, the cathedral has been altered but still incorporates medieval work.
