Reportedly the largest village in England, Braunton in North Devon is in matter of fact more like a town these days. Dissecting the centre of the village is the Caen stream, a tributary of the river Taw. Braunton took its name from St Brannock, a Welsh missionary who converted the locals to Christianity in the 6th Century. St Brannock founded a chapel in Braunton at a place where, in a dream, he was told he would find a sow with a litter of piglets. The later 13th Century church pays tribute to this with a carving of a sow with her litter on one of the carved roof bosses.
