The village of Bransgore (4 miles north of Christchurch) is situated in the far south west corner of the New Forest, although the majority of the village lies outside the new New Forest National Park. The village was not formed until the late 18th century, it is first mentioned in 1759 and is thought to have originated as a stopping off point for sheep herders on their way to the market in Ringwood. It was evidently not much thought of for in 1840 the canon of Winchester described it as a "neglected common with a group of mud cottages, the refuge, for the most part, of those who have been chased from more civilised places"!
