Brampton, in the north east corner of Cumbria, is a market town of some 4,000 people, said to have been founded in the 7th century. Henry II granted the town its charter, and the first market was held here in 1252. Much of the building is in local red sandstone, but the abiding impression will be of traditional Cumbrian white-washed houses. The area can claim some earlier roots though, with the Romans having built Hadrian’s Wall just a stroll away, a fact that is commemorated by a statue to the emperor in the town centre.
