East Boldon, West Boldon and Boldon Colliery form a group of three villages situated between South Shields and Sunderland in northeast England. Originally part of County Durham, they now form part of South Tyneside. Once an ancient Saxon settlement, the name ’bol’ meaning building and ‘don’ or ‘dun’ meaning ‘hill, referring to an old wooden church on top of the hill by the river Don where the 13th century church of St.Nicholas now stands. Referred to in the Boldon Book in 1183, the original, ancient village became West Boldon whilst the nearby village of Newton became East Boldon, home to many of the tradesmen and merchants.
