Blaenau Ffestiniog is to be found surrounded by the Snowdonia National Park, despite this location it is not in the National Park and to establish why we have to look back a short way through history. In the 19th century slate was the basis of wealth in Snowdonia and the surrounding area and Blaenau Ffestiniog was the centre of that industry. The town is central to the quarrying, mining and associated building that has been undertaken in the area all linked by a system of inclines and railways. Today many of the mines are largely derelict but the legacy they left behind are the grey slate waste tips that surround the town.
