In County Durham, in north east England, lies the market town of Bishop Auckland, approximately twelve miles northwest of Darlington and south west of Durham city, at the confluence or the river Weir and its tributary Gaunless. The residence of the Bishop of Durham gives the town the first part of its name, whilst the origin or meaning of the second part is less clear. It is thought to have derived from the Celtic “Alclif†or “Alcleat†referring to its position close to the river now known as Gaunless or it could refer to “Oakland†acknowledging the presence of forests.
