Bideford is an attractive town in North Devon on the West bank of Torridge river where it widens to form the estuary. The river is forded by a fine arched stone bridge built in 1535 to replace a wooden one constructed around 1300. In the 1500’s Bideford was Britain’s third largest port and takes its name from “By-the-fordâ€. Known for its shopping, the town holds weekly produce and craft markets. It also has some excellent antique shops. Known locally as drangs, the narrow backstreets and alleyways winding up from the quay and river hide no end of treasure to be sought out by seasoned shoppers.
