Berkhamsted is a popular town in the Chiltern Hills, has a population of 19,000 and is a conservation area. Located near Hemel Hempstead and surrounded by countryside, it is a commercially prosperous and affluent place. Many famous people are from here, namely John Cleese, Sarah Brightman and Graham Greene amongst others. It is currently the home of the British Film Institute's National Film and Television Archive. The town is set on the Grand Union canal, the stretch opened in 1798 and was the main route during the industrial revolution, linking London to the West Midlands.
