During the Roman occupation it held strategic importance being so close to Hadrian's Wall, today sees visitors eager to explore the many delights on offer. For all things Roman there are the ruins of Benwell Roman Temple which was dedicated to Antenociticus, or why not take a look at Arbeia Roman Fort which housed a Garrison. For splendid architecture Newcastle Cathedral has it all, from a mesmerising spire, to Medieval glass, or possibly the white washed home of Stephenson will uncover a glimpse into 18th Century living, step outside and wander along the riverside path and the old Wylam Colliery Wagon Way.
